Before MSU | Teaching Summary | Composition Pedagogies

Rhetoric History and Theory | Research Colloquium

Above are the specifics of my semester as both a full time teacher at Alma College and as a full time student at MSU during the 2006 calendar year. This narrative discusses my time before coming to the Rhetoric and Writing program, a summary of my teaching during my first semester as a grad student, as well as details of the three courses I took during that first semester. Below are links to my coursework and teaching materials. After one semester at MSU, I have no doubt in my mind that being in this program is absolutely the right thing for me. I do know that before coming here I couldn't imagine that there was more to learn about composition, at least not enough to fill a PhD with, so I wanted to focus on creative nonfiction. One semester, and I am excruciatingly aware of the complexities of the field, of the myriad possibilities awaiting me, and the necessity of a program like this. It informs my teaching, shapes and molds my thinking, helps me understand so much outside of the box I have so long identified with, and gives me insight and perspective that is already making a very big difference in who I am and what I do. I am so excited to see how the upcoming courses will do even more.
