I grade all writing assignments according to five criteria: content, purpose, support, organization, and composition (which includes grammar, punctuation, and the like). These five areas look very different depending on the assignment, but they are always important in any writing. Likewise for writing in digital environments. For more details on my "five criteria," please take a look at my "master rubric." However, when writing in digital environments, other considerations come into play like visual elements. While visual elements have always been a consideration--handwriting, margins, font size and type, neatness, etc.--writing in digital environments can require us to asses things like layout, font, hypertext, images, color, and more. In other words, when assessing student writing in digital environments, I will need a sixth criteria: technological and visual elements.
