Tools and Materials Studio

Ashlee Forde '09 in the Shop
This course serves as an introduction to elements of art and design as they relate to work done in three dimensions: line, plane, mass, volume, texture, color, and style. Since ideas and the materials and techniques used to express them cannot be dealt with separately, the problems presented to you will be both theoretical and practical.
Each of the projects will enable you to explore the design process from initial conceptualization, through production processes, to final presentation. Although specific in terms of technical objectives, the projects will be open-ended enough to allow for development of a range of interpretations. The resulting awareness of possibilities should challenge your inventiveness as you attempt to use new materials and techniques to carry out your own ideas.
Serving also as an introduction to the use of basic tools, materials, and studio procedures, this course is designed to enhance your ability to make the things you need to make – whether in connection with other studio work or simply for the pleasure that comes from doing something well.
4 Credits. AH – 1. Taught in Winter Term.
